IDENTITY

Roger Erickson’s Project Statement

San Francisco City Hall Exhibition

Over the past six years, I have trained my lens on sexual identity and it’s evolution within American society. The LGBT  individuals who share this perspective transverse all levels of society, while asserting their individual rights and liberties in the face of uncertainty. Some are visionaries in their fields, challenging our opinions on sexuality and how it relates to the world around us. These photographs represent a visual commentary on the progression of the sexual revolution and it’s impact on American popular culture.

The intention of this project is to evoke change through discourse by challenging societal perceptions on gender and sexual identity. In order to achieve this, one approach will be the creation of a book to accompany a traveling exhibition at various public spaces and museums around the globe. It would serve as a counter narrative, similar to “The Exhibit of American Negroes” in the 1900s, Paris Exposition. This was an exhibit which showcased family portraits of proudly dressed African American to counter the racial perceptions associated with America’s “Jim Crow Laws” of that era.

Meg Shiffler, Director of the San Francisco Art Commission Galleries, recently acquired this series entitled “Identity” for it’s inaugural exhibition at the historic San Francisco City Hall. This seventy image exhibition will run for four months starting in June till September 2015. It will open the weekend of San Francisco Pride, which is one of the world\’s largest LGBT parades and festivals.

The estimated budget needed to complete this project is $35,000. Each of the seventy, framed color and black and white photographs, will range in size from 20in x 30in to 30in x 40in prints. Your generous donation would go towards covering printing expenses, and the production costs of photographing additional individuals from the New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area. The target dates for the next shoot is February, 2015 in San Francisco. Printing will begin in April of 2015.

Some of the luminaries photographed in this series are Chris Colfer, Wanda Sykes, Rufus Wainwright, Rachel Maddow, Bishop Gene Robinson, Lady Bunny, Edward Albee, Greg Louganis, Armistead Maupin, Gillian Anderson, and Evan Rachel Woods. Many of these participants have made important contributions in the areas of religion, entertainment, politics, fashion, journalism, music, sports, arts, photography, philosophy, activism, theater and business.

Around the globe many people within the LGBT community experience, discrimination, ostracism and imprisonment. What I want viewers to take away from this project is a heightened sense of empowerment as well as an enlightened understanding that our humanity lies within the belief that we are not so different after all. The power of sexuality stems from a basic desire to connect with one another and through that connection we share a commonality. Sexual identity is a necessary part of self awareness, and by embracing it, we may find a certain measure of comfort in ourselves.
