The whole world is an ethnic mixture, because cultures come in contact with others, and cannot withstand the constant exchanges and mutual influences. Does global multiculturalism catch us unprepared? I will investigate this question by photographing and interviewing members of the growing Creole society in Italy.

Creoles: New faces of a multicultural Italy

My project stands for the will to step further the issues of massive immigration and integration in Italy, revealing the growing  reality of multiethnic people among the italian society components, which have been silently ignored until now.

The goal of this project is to extend the series up to 100 portraits with subjects found throughout Italy, starting from a base of 40 close-up of “creoles”. The project thus far has been exhibited twice as well as published on a National Geographic Italia issue which I’ve produced by myself.

The whole world is an ethnic mixture, because cultures come in contact with others, and cannot withstand the constant exchanges and mutual influences. Does global multiculturalism catch us unprepared? One wonders if integration in Italy will have a different path and be less confrontational than in other nations with a strong colonial past.

Let’s pretend to have overcome the problems related to the recent massive immigration. We must realize that we are already on to subsequent generations, and have the imperative to learn to be with others and open up to their presence and the transformation they bring. The Creoles are bearers of difference – symbols of the evolution of society in the world and exemplify how to survive in diversity – far from the one and the identical, because they oppose universality and schismatic purity, all the opportunities of harmonization, maintaining diversity.

I am seeking financial support from the photographic community to continue this quest into the multicultural integration of Creoles in Italy. With the support of this campaign, I’ll be able to undertake a second step and collect the portrait series in a book with text and interviews, both of anthropological and social value. Any donations and encouragement would be greatly appreciated! I believe these people and the greater community of immigrants in Europe deserve the attention my project could deliver; therefore, sharing my story with friends, family, and on social media would be a huge help in itself.
