My name is Vincenzo (known as Enzo) Amato. I am a commercial photographer working in Sydney, Australia. Street Art has become a major part of my photographic portfolio having worked closely with a gallery in Sydney which supports young artists who use the power of public art to visually express their social and political voice. I am about to turn 50 this year and my dream is to travel to Cuba and capture the ‘new revolution’ taking place. Cubans for decades have used street art as a medium to communicate and with my Nikon, I want to document what the people are feeling and thinking now that the borders have opened and translate these images into a photographic socio/art history book.

The Cuba Street Art Project

My name is Vincenzo (known as Enzo) Amato. I am a commercial photographer working in Sydney, Australia. I’m originally from Naples, Italy and came to Australia in my early 30s establishing a career in event photography, covering events such as PR launches, red carpet, art gallery openings and emerging artist shows. Street Art has become a major part of my photographic portfolio having worked closely with a gallery in Sydney for a number years which supports young artists who find the power of public art the best way to share their social and political voice. Over the years I have documented some incredible works and what makes me so excited about street art is its non-permanence and unedited ‘in your face’ message.

Examples of my commercial work of street art with Ambush Gallery more can be viewed here: http://www.enzoamatophotographer.com.au

My passion really ignited for this type of art in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was fortunate enough to be at the right place and the right time on the eve the wall came down. The chaos and energy of the people was electric augmenting this monumental political change. I was only 26 at the time living in Berlin, where my passion to document history through photography took off.

Cuba has always fascinated me. The spirit of the people and their ability to make the most of what they had despite the suppression and poverty is inspiring. Their ‘patria’ for their country, the vibrancy of their culture and freedom for the people is evident in their street art.

Cubans are renowned for using the medium of street art to express their true feelings of their plight and hope for a new Cuba. I am about to turn 50 this year, a milestone year, and for many a life changing year. Cuba is also in the midst of great change and it would be my greatest dream to tour Cuba from Havanna and all 16 provinces on my monumental 50th year and capture the ‘new revolution’ of Cuba with my Nikon. With my images I would like to produce a photographic book which I hope one day may be used as an socio-political/art reference book.

I would be greatly honoured if you were to pledge your support for me to undertake this project. For your pledge I would gift you signed prints from my book and an invitation to my photographic exhibition if you live in Sydney, Australia.

I plan to log my tour with updates through Facebook and Instagram. For those who pledge please follow me on https://instagram.com/photoenz/ and I will keep you up to date with my adventures and snapshots as I go.

My wife and I have just had our second daughter, Lucia. She is only 3-weeks old. As soon as she gets a little bigger I will start making plans to start my trip in 2016.

Here below are some examples of my work in the press:
