There is a lack of quality photography books in Guatemala. My goal is to grow the collection of books that I have accumulated, and make it available in a culture space for everyone to use.
I’m Guatemalan and I love photography.
A few years ago I became a professional photographer and realized that there are no photography books of good quality and content in my country, so I started my own library and I have been buying books for some years now, every time I travel overseas I have bought many books through the internet, but I still feel that I need more books to have a complete and comprehensive source of information.
I want to have my collection of books available for everyone in a cultural space where they can find information dedicated to photography of all the world (Latin-American, European, Asian, African) and of any kind (historical, documental, contemporary, sports, fashion, editorial, etc.) as well as techniques, tutorials and teaching resources.
I want this place to be the point of reference for every person that loves photography in Guatemala and Central America but for this I need funds to buy more books and pay shipping for new or used books I get through donations. You can help me fulfill this dream!
I believe that books are doors to other worlds, a way to get inside the mind of other photographers and their ways of thinking. They are the perfect way to show what they think, what they fear, what they feel, through images or texts, it’s fascinating for me to have a piece of their work.
For the past five years, I’ve been teaching photography to aspiring students, ages of 20 to 35 . I’ve taught several workshops at El Club Fotográfico de Guatemala, La Fototeca and Loyola, where I’m teaching at the moment.
Since I’ve been teaching I’ve seen that books always change my students’ minds, they start thinking about how photographers have created their images, their techniques, the message they want to give to the world.
I’ve seen that books always inspire students to believe in themselves and that the only limits are in their own minds. My idea is not only to show this world to photography students but also to people that don’t even know anything about photography, I want for them to fall in love with it as I did.
Your pledges will contribute to the purchase of the collection of books for “El Fotocafe” (a name it will be called once established!), Guatemala’s only photography library and culture space. The space will be located near the cultural zones in the City that could be accessible for everyone.
