Dan Wynn’s fashion images of perfectly coiffed women tell us a lot about the time, the ideals, and what was expected of American women during the mid-twentieth century. He also photographed many major figures of the era, from Alfred Hitchcock and Salvador Dali to Bob Dylan and Al Pacino at the start of their careers. His body of work serves as a time capsule of the period from the 1950’s and post WWII optimism to the late 1960’s when every aspect of life was changed by the Vietnam War and the Women’s Liberation and Civil Rights Movements.
Dan Wynn was a prolific photographer for 45 years, starting in 1947. He was contemporary of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn and became well known for his food photography, but his stunning fashion and beauty work, portraits of celebrities and cultural icons and innovative advertising photography have been largely overlooked. I see it as a huge responsibility to take on someone else’s lifetime of work and give it the care and protection it deserves, but this is what I love to do and have done for other photographers and artists in the past. The ultimate goal of the Dan Wynn Archive project is to organize, preserve and digitize Dan Wynn’s work and make it available to the public. In order to make that happen, the funds raised will be used to scan Mr. Wynn’s archive. My goal is to have the bulk of the work completed within one year. All backers will receive quarterly updates on the progress and will be first to see newly discovered images. Also as a thank you, we are offering Limited Edition Fine Art prints and a limited number of Vintage silver gelatin prints, personally printed by Dan Wynn. Dan Wynn’s work is culturally and artistically important and deserves attention so it may be observed as the document of history it is and so his work may be included in the narrative of the important photographers of the 20th century. Thank you very much for your consideration of pledging support to the Dan Wynn Archive project. I look forward to updating you on our progress!
